An Update

I've realized that I worried you all and just left some of you hanging. I apologize for that, and want to start off by assuring you that Miss J and I are doing ok. We have family that read my blog and are aware of the situation, so if things become uneasy again here in our home we have a couple of safe places to retreat to. But you know what? I don't plan on doing any retreating. Instead, I plan to stand up and fight, because... well, I've already laid down and taken it. Its time for me to advocate for myself. I have victim's rights dammit!

Monday morning I headed straight to UCPD and filed a harassment complaint. The Officer I met with pretty much reprimanded me for not filing for sole custody of the baby way before now, if in deed the situation was as bad as I was telling her, and my envelope of documentation, and his police record was telling her it was. I broke down in tears and explained to her that I am definitely all about preventative measures, but when you are mentally fragile and someone is constantly mentally abusing you its very hard to move forward and push past the fear, anxiety and depression. Not to mention the fact that the DA had never gotten in touch with me about my previous case as I was told he would, therefore crushing my faith and trust in the structure of the law. She understood and reassured me that she was in no way blaming me for enduring my abuse or saying that I was completely bad for sending my child off to the home of a man whose companionship likes to bag up weed in his living room, just pointing out that as a mother, its my responsibility to make sure that my child is always safe, and if I don't feel like he can provide a safe atmosphere then I have the right to not let her be a part of a potentially dangerous situation. I agreed. Finally, someone was on the same page as I was about the strong need to not just wait until something bad happened, but to do everything in my power to make sure that day never comes.

So, after opening a new case to supplement the existing one, I headed over to the Gender Equity and Resource Center to seek out guidance on getting a restraining order. I did a bit of research on Sunday and found the Family Violence Law Center, which is a non-profit in my county that assists people dealing with family violence in getting restraining orders and custody sorted out. And they work with the GendEq Center. I discovered that there's such a thing as a Domestic Violence Restraining Order, and I now have those forms, all "hella many" pages of them half way filled out. I have a follow up appointment with an advocate on campus and I am in the process of setting up an appointment with the advocate from the Family Violence Law Center, who is in a position to help me with completing and filing the forms, can accompany me to court and fight with me to regain control and some possible closure to this situation.

We'll see how this whole thing plays out. He texted me again tonight asking if I can bring Miss J over on Saturday (in which he spelled her name wrong, don't worry, we're not gonna go there, ok?)... and then called me. I have not, nor do I have any intention, on responding to either. I'm physically and mentally done. Until I can file this restraining order packet, and until I find someone to supervise the temporary visitation that will probably come with the restraining order/temporary custody arrangements, the contact between he and I, thus he and Miss J will be cut off. I just can't deal with it right now nor is it wise to be talking to/traveling to his home under the circumstances!

As the process unfolds I will keep you updated, as not to worry you all half to death about our safety. I am hoping that he will just stay on his side of town and allow us to stay on ours. And I am also hoping that he has not decided to one-up me by starting a custody case of his own, since he says he has been talking to a lawyer. We shall see...

I lay deep under the covers in my bed, thoughts racing, shaking in fear. I wanna get up and check my locks, and go to the kitchen and get a knife, but I can't move.  Get up Barbara!  Go check the locks and go get a knife to put under your pillow.  He could be outside the door.  He could be watching the house, waiting for you to flip the light switch.  God, what if he tries to kill me?  I gotta get outta here.  We gotta get away from here.  He thinks I'm a lesbian.  What if he tries to kill me?  Can I get him on a hate crime?

I am finally able to move.  I creep to my front door and peer through the darkness at the locks. All locks are secure, chain is secure.  I creep into the kitchen and turn on the light above the stove.  Reach into the drawer and come out with my butcher's knife.  I come back to my room and place the knife under my pillow.  I wanna cry.  There is fear.  I don't wanna be scared.  I wanna cry.  I take off my night shirt and panties, grab my towel and head for the shower.  This is my safe place, when I need to cry, when I need to be alone, I can think in here.

Warmth caresses my body and the tears start to flow.  Silently.  Then full blown crying. Crying... chocking back tears... crying... chocking back tears... then a full blown panic attack.  Oh my God, I am having an anxiety attack, in the fucking shower.  I can't breathe!  The gasping for air and crying is growing louder and completely outta my control.  Good thing I'm in the shower or I might wake Jalia.  Try to regain control.  Just breathe.  Just breathe.  Not working. You have to just breathe!  I try to take some deep breaths.  It starts to work.  5 minutes later, I am back in control, the attack has passed, I shut off the water, wrap myself in my towel, open the bathroom door slowly and proceed back into my room.  I dress myself and pick up the Mac...

God.  Please help me!  I can't do this.  What do I do?  Do I go to UCPD to get a restraining order?  They can't even give me one.  They will refer me to the Gender Equity Center.  What kind of a fucking police department can't issue a fucking restraining order????  I FUCKING HATE CAL!!!!!!

God.  Please help me!  What do I do?  I don't feel safe here.  We are not safe here.  He is gonna try to take my baby.  What if he tries to kill me? I can't deal with this.  I have a paper due on Tuesday.  Dammit!!!  I can't do this.  I want him to die.  If I hear so much as a jiggle of a door handle I will put this knife straight through his fucking chest!

What do I do?

With Friends Like These

Have you ever sat back and assessed a relationship and wondered why you were still participating in it?  We may find ourselves doing this when it comes to romantic relationships, but what about when it comes to friendships?  Its interesting just how much stuff we take from our friends for the sake of saving the friendship.  How many things we turn a blind eye to, or a deaf ear, when the relationship may not even be worth saving.

Have you had to eliminate any bad apples from your inner circle, and if so, what did they do that classified as the very last straw?

So... Now They Wanna Take Her Kids?

Larry Seidlin, the loony ass judge that presided over the Anna Nicole Smith trial, thinks that we need to "save the state" from Nadya Suleman.  Interesting.

Attorney Gloria Aldridge speaks of possible legal action being taken against Nadya if she refuses the assistance of nurses from an NGO called Angels in Waiting, when the babies come home.  Interesting.

Is there any way to turn this whole thing off?  I am sick to DEATH of hearing about this shit. JESUS H. CHRIST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Why can't I just get the weather or the local news when I turn on the tv?  Why I gotta hear about how much everyone seems to hate her every second of the god damned day???  Can someone please tell me that?  Or better yet, can someone please inform the media that there are much more important issues in the world to be "reporting" on? Every time this lady farts, a reporter is not only there to smell it, but also to do a full report on its length and pitch.  This shit is becoming just as bad as reality tv culture... which is a totally different post for a totally different day/early morning after I've had a full night's sleep.

More Blog Love

I'm always excited and happy to receive an award from a fellow blogger. And always shocked to know that those fellow bloggers consider my ranting, raving, potty mouthed self to even be worthy of an award.  Diva Ma, over at Mommy Fabulous, not only thinks I'm worthy, but she also thinks that I'm "real, sassy and a true diva in those polka dot shoes!" Well, thank you Mrs. Diva Ma.  I really appreciate the love and I appreciate you sharing these wonderful awards me.

Now, time to share them with other great bloggers, and time to let you know why they are so great.  I will share this with just 3 bloggers instead of the 10 stated by the "rules".  Of course all of you are great and deserve these awards, but I've never shared awards with these three ladies so this time, its their time.

Her blog really is a place for the "young" mommy.  She breaks down issues that are relevant to us and she has taken us all on a home buying journey with her as she, her husband, and their two kids have just purchased their very first house!

-Mama Shujaa, who has a blog of the same name
She is definitely a "mother of courage" as she shares her memories of her childhood in Kenya and her beautiful poetry.  She really is a GREAT writer, hands down.  And she made a wonderful virtual tutor as she helped me with my Kiswahili.

-Akilah of Execumama Online
Showing us all how to be successful businesswomen, while mothering our children, Akilah always has a funny story to tell, which often has to do with her little "negotiator" and "gangsta boo".

Here's to you ladies =).  Don't forget to:

1.Post these on your blog
2. Link back to me
3. And share them with other bloggers that you love.

Whatever Moves the Process Along

Its amazing what a little bribing can do. My grandmother told Miss J that if she didn't put up a knock down drag out fight during our after-wash combing and styling period, that she'd finally buy her the bike she's been promising her for nearly a year and a half earn that bike she's been wanting. You should of seen her. Stifling her cries. Trying to make it through the detangling process without losing complete control. She did a really good job, only mentioning once how much she'd like to go take a nap.

In Loving Color

Cue sexy music *here*... Take it away Patti

I was the only 'single' in the Punany Poet house, and damn it, I was a hot one!

I was worried about being the weird chick, with the notebook, gathered amongst those in love and lust.  Since every single soul that I propositioned for an evening out was either busy, working, or too much of a chicken to actually come right out and say that "spoken word" really wasn't their thing or that not under any circumstances would they be celebrating Valentine's Day in any way, shape, or form.  I was quickly adopted by a couple who was eager to know what they'd gotten themselves into by being in attendance.  They were unfamiliar with the group, except for the small Real Sex segment they'd seen on HBO, as was the majority of the room.  It was my first Punany experience too, but compared to the rest, I was about the most knowledgeable in terms of the group's foundation.  I found this to be highly interesting since the group's founding members are originally from Oakland!  From the mindless chatter of the audience during the Lady In Red's talk of HIV/AIDS awareness, I could tell that many were hoping that their $75 paid for more tits and ass and less chit chat.  They were unaware that this was the basis for the evenings events.  To save lives, educate and empower.

Between Hershey, the male exotic dancer, dancing, flipping and slinging his goodies in the faces and on the Punany's of willing participants, Punany's Pearl took it to the next level when she did her thing and assisted a guy in removing a string of pearls from her vagina.  Uh huh... why else do you think they call her Punany's Pearl!?!

All in all it was a good night.  I ate, indulged in a Tequila Sunrise, planted my butt in my chair instead of venturing out and interviewing some of the folks seated with me, got a few pages of notes from my observations, and enjoyed the show.  I'd advise you to call a sitter, grab your sweetie or your girls or just your purse and check out a show when the poets come to your area.  You can check their show schedule by visiting www.punanytickets.com.

Sweet

Need I say more?  My little nieces are just blossoming like two tulips. They are so precious, and funny, and active, and happy, and talkative... I just can't get enough of these little ladies. They remind me so much of Miss J when she was that age.  She'd coo up a storm, and just the sight of my face could put a smile on her's.  Now, what could be sweeter than that?

Sexual Healing: Letters of Resolution

The power of the human spirit to "endure" is amazing.  Everyone has a story.  One that is unique to their own personal situation(s), and yet, belonging to a larger shared community as well.  And it is the sharing, and retelling of these stories that, I think, make both endurance and healing possible.  A long time ago I stumbled upon a certain "healing method" that I could never bring myself to give a try.  It was one which asked you to write a letter to those who have wronged you/hurt you. In this letter, you were suppose to say all the things that you kept penned up inside, about the ways that this person has negatively affected you.  And through this act of expression, healing is suppose to follow.

It is an exercise that is meant to be a form of release and also one that places you in complete control over your thoughts and feelings.  Once the letter has been written, you do not have to deliver the letter to the person if you are still not ready to face them or confront them.  You can simply get all of those feelings out and hang on to it until you are ready or do something symbolic, like burning or ripping it into tiny pieces.

I am now up for this challenge.  There are two letters that I'd really like to write, to two people, both dealing with a form of sexual abuse.  This is one way that I can grant myself a platform and a voice while clearing experiences that tear at me on a daily basis.  These things should have a place, but not within my spirit.  Its time to release them and share their burdening power with the one who shall be held accountable and with another who "really needs to know" what occurred under her roof.

A Few Schools Saved: A Temporary Fix

Looks like my hometown (Richmond, CA) was able to step up to ensure that the future of its students would not be denied as a direct result of school closures.  The city pledged $1.5 million, which saved 4 schools from the chopping block.  However, this victory is bittersweet because other schools still remain on the closure list awaiting their cities to "bail them out", and there is concern that in another 2 years the city will be right back to a point of needing to close schools in order to "save the state".

I know that in situations like what we are currently in, as far as the state of the economy and all, things will get worse before they get better, but I do hope and pray for a speedy recovery. Lives have been touched greatly by this crisis and lives are at stake.  We need a resolution to this madness.  At a time when those approaching college graduation are deciding to stay on for an extra year or hurry off to grad school to hide out until things get better, there lives a level of fear in graduates who either do not have these options or can not afford to take advantage of them.  Come May, I am gonna need a lot of Charoite in my life.

Verbal Penetration

To make up for the fact that I can't continue to study AIDS in Sub-Saharan Africa this semester and may not be making the Punany Poets performance this Valentine's night, I will submit to being verbally penetrated by Jessica Holter aka Ghetto Girl Blue and her "partners in Punany crime."  I was excited to finally have this book in my hands.  303 pages of poetic sexual revolution, activism and education.  "Saving lives one rhythm at a time..."

I'd like to share one of my favorites with you.  This poem is one written by Holter, and is a conversation between a woman and her Punany.  Its a favorite because it provides what Holter refers to as a "mind fuck".  She draws you in with her homegirl tone and humorous scenarios in order to make you think without even realizing it.  The end result: Stimulation that transcends the physical, female empowerment and education through being knowledgeable and in tune with your own vaginal health.

Enjoy.

Next to Your Punany
By: Kineta James aka Jessica Holter

If your punany came
and sat down next to you...

Would she be like
"Now Bitch... You know you need to stop doggin' me!"

Would she be like, "girl, I ain't seen you in a long time!
How you been?"

When your pussy walks into the room,
would you have to open up the windows?

Hey, what would she be wearing?

Would you be glad you kept your grandmother's
plastic couch covers when she sat down?

Would she be prim, happy & bright,
intellectually stimulating you while you drink Evian,
and discuss your relationship in relation to raising a nation
of men who don't wear their pants like diapers
and reside in cribs and their mammas' houses
and daughters
who don't become mothers before they are tax payers...
or
Would your pussy kind of limp into your living room
slouching & scratching like a dope fiend
begging and trying to sell you a stolen box of maxi pads

If a friend came over while you were visiting with your punany
would you let them in? Or would you be embarrassed?
Or be like hell of excited like
"Oh my God, you have got to meet my pussy!  She is so cute.
She's got these pouty lips and this wild red hair..."

If your pussy came and sat down next
to you right now,
would she be expecting a few apologies?

Would she wanna beat your behind?
If she said
she came to tell you she was dying
do you know for sure that she would be lying?

Change of Plans

So, I planned this semester out with a really clear rubric.  I was suppose to take one course that would fulfill the last of my college requirements (Cal has various colleges that have their own GE requirements toward graduation), take two electives for my major, a class on moving beyond Cal, and finishing up my thesis.

Not all that bad, right?  Well, no, if I had been able to get all of my readers BEFORE THE 4TH WEEK OF CLASSES and if my GE class didn't have an 18 PAGE RESEARCH PAPER due at the end and if the professor for my Women & Hip Hop class actually KNEW SOMETHING ABOUT HIP HOP!!!!

See where I'm going with this?

After paying $42 for the reader yesterday, I decided that it would be in my best interest to drop the class with the 18 pages.  I mean, I don't even know what the hell I was thinking when I went ahead and remained in this class in the first place.  Yes, its a class on AIDS in Sub-Saharan Africa, which in a slim way is related to my thesis.  Yes, learning about AIDS would be a lot more enjoyable than tackling social theory again (which would have also satisfied the same GE requirement).  But none of these things should have mattered considering the fact that I knew that I would also be devoting time to plowing through books/articles/performances/notes/revisions and I don't know what else to produce 20 pages of work.  You know, the research paper that really matters.  As soon as I got the syllabus I shoulda been out, but no, Ms. I Can Do It! was in full effect as always.

Perhaps all the current cold air consuming my scalp has helped to unveil my Berkeley reality.

Barbara, it would be much more productive for you to focus on completing just ONE research paper this semester, especially since you couldn't even complete just ONE last semester.  You shouldn't have tried to run from theory because now you will have to spend your half your summer with it in addition to the math class... but its ok, because you were gonna have to take an additional class anyway in order to get summer financial aid.  Now you don't have to wonder and worry about which additional class that will be.

And so... the journey to cross the finish line continues.

I've Been Converted

I can finally put my nearly 7 year old Toshiba to rest, or at least reassign her to educational game duty under the guidance of Miss J.  I was like a kid in a candy store yesterday, waiting for a body in a blue shirt to come serve me.  Man, I was so not prepared for the Apple store.  It was my very first visit and boy are they hardcore.  It was one of the busiest stores in the plaza.  I've been a PC user forever, and I bought my iPod at Target so I'm really quite the Apple madness virgin.  Everyone had a gadget in hand, testing it out, asking questions, making purchases.  Even Miss J found herself playing games on an iPod touch as I was trying to decide which Macbook I should buy.  They even had a special area where the kids could entertain themselves with computer games on a ridiculously huge monitor.  After about an hour, I left with my brand new Macbook and storage case.

Now comes the fun part.  Transferring all of my pictures and music over, installing my printer and camera software, which I am not even sure that I need to install because of the iPhoto stuff that I need to play around with, and going through PC withdrawal as I learn all the shortcuts and Mac commands.  I've already had to bug Renee on how to copy and paste without right and left clicking, because, with a Macbook, there is only one long mouse button to click.  I have no complaints so far, my conversion is going rather smoothly.

If you are a Mac user and you have any tips, tricks or anything else you'd like to share with me about mastering the Mac, feel free.

I Am Not My Hair: New Member of the "Big Chop" Club

As you all know, I have been up and down, and 'round and 'round, lately. Trying my hand at re-discovering and re-claiming myself and my passions. I did a bit of that today, as I did something that I have been itching to do for a very long time. A. BIG. CHOP. I went from this

My cut on its off day. No glits or glam, just new-growth, grown out color and a missing hairline.

to this

Bald and beautiful.

I went in and had Wildboy take me back to my nappy roots. I am loving my new look. I felt so good once all the permed hair was off. I did a little happy dance in the chair, and then did another happy dance when India Arie's I Am Not My Hair came on while I was being shampooed. It couldn't have played out more perfectly than that!

With natural curls springing up all over the place these days I wasn't nervous at all about making the change. My new bloggy friend, Eboni of Natural Thinker, shared her story of returning to naturality and Saleemah Cartwright of HealthyHairJourney.com chopped off her long strands on camera, showing her viewers just how easy, refreshing and pretty going natural can be. Sometimes, its not an easy decision to follow through with a big chop because of the backlash that often comes with it. While some find your new curls to be beautiful or sexy, others find them to be quite odd in a day and age of relaxers and weaves. Already I've gotten mixed reviews about my new crop, but I'm not bothered by them. As long as I am happy with how I look that's all that really matters. When Miss J got a glimpse of my head she couldn't stop saying, "Mom! You shaved your head?" Followed by, "you look like a boy." Meant with all the love in the world of course. She took some time out to come sit next to me and rub my head like she was trying to make a genie come out of it. When I asked her if she liked it, with a huge smile, she answered yes.

I am happy with my new found freedom to work up a sweat without fear of ruining my hairstyle. And I actually left Wildboy's chair with money in my pocket! How great is that?

Although I pulled strength and inspiration from the two ladies mentioned above, my final look was inspired by the talented India Arie.

1. Please don't tell me that I've gained weight.

2. Can you make sure I don't reset my alarm clock in the morning?

3. The color purple makes me want to polish my nails!

4. I have a craving for happiness.

5. If my life had a pause button, I'd pause it every time the depression bug bit me.

6. Eyes are the ultimate lie detector.

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to coming up with a real game plan for how I'm gonna survive the next 4 months, tomorrow my plans include playing in some natural hair and Sunday, I want to work on a list of possible dates to a Valentine's night Punany Poets show... no lovey dovey stuff, this is strictly research people =)!

Trapped

"Why do you hate me so much", he asked. I get chills each time he asks me that. "I've told you a million times why, but you never listen", I reply.

He tells me that I am living in the past, and that "we" need to get past "the past".

Oh really? Get past "the past", huh? Isn't the number 1 requirement for transcending the past acknowledgment of it? And you don't just "get past" the past. You grow and evolve because of it. You don't know where you're going until you know where you've been...

My personal pain has reached a red alert. I'm at a point in my life where I feel that, in order for me to find true happiness and peace, I am gonna have to just pick up and go. There was a time when my whole family was in one place. Very centered. Now, only a few of us remain, merely existing, not living. Sometimes a change of scenery, a change of environment, a change of support networks, a new start, is just the right push to begin the process of living again.

I told Miss J's dad that he should start to enjoy his time with his daughter because this is the last year that we'll be around. He took that to mean that my life's mission is to take his child away from him. That, not only am I milking him for child support, that now I want to escape with his investment. So, he informed me that he has a lawyer, and that he will "put the plan in motion" so that I can't leave California if he has to. I guess that would also mean no to a name change. I don't see it as having much to do with the baby at all, but everything to do with his need to have a level of control over me, since he also said that he has no problem with me going where ever my degree leads me. If I relocate for a better opportunity, doesn't that involve taking my child with me? Aren't planes, trains and automobiles still adequate modes of travel? So, at what point would Miss J be kept away from him? And if he does feel the need to "put his plan in motion", does he think that the judge will only hear his side of the story? Does he think the court will not want to take his character, his past, his present, into consideration when trying to establish whether or not we should share custody of our daughter? No, according to him, since I will have my degree, I will be making more money than him, and when he gets joint custody I will have to pay him support, instead of him paying me support. Wow.

This entire situation is like a really bad nightmare... more like a night-terror that just keeps replaying itself over and over. I constantly examine the past, looking for clues to the red flags. Where did I go blind? Unaware of other women before and after baby, rape, STIs, mental abuse, 3 more children with 2 more women (whom I've never met), siblings that are too many for my daughter to keep up with. How did 1 man gain the ability to have a lasting negative effect on my life? How could he have been a part of my life for 5 years before baby and then totally flip the script on my ass after baby? Walking away from the situation all together before the staples were removed from my belly.

I just want the pain to stop. I want him to be a distant memory. I want the mental torment to stop. I want him to stop trying to break me. To stop envying my pending success. To stop sexually harrassing me. To stop threatening me. To stop making my child love him when he knows that he doesn't really have time to be the kind of father that she deserves. To stop having more children so that maybe he could have the time to be the father that his children deserve... I want to run. No forwarding address. No number in service. Without a trace.

I could have gotten a restraining order a long time ago. I could have gone to court and faught for full custody a long time ago. Why didn't I? Its simple. I don't trust the law. It isn't set up to work for women and children in cases of physical and sexual abuse, not to mention mental abuse. Because as I was told by the police, "if he hasn't hit you then there isn't anything we can do", "you will have to get him to confess", "unless he harms the child or puts the child in danger, there isn't anything we can do", "there wasn't enough evidence in the rape kit, so there isn't a case". Why the fuck would I trust the law to see that he is not in the best interest of my child? To an outsider, all of this looks like the problem is strictly between the two of us, and that Miss J is just caught in the middle of a bunch of bitterness, but like I've said before, it goes much deeper than that. He took something away from me that can't be replaced. He changed my life in such a way that I am now stagnant. He stripped me of my agency. He has it all now. I want it back and that wont happen if I stay here.

Right now, I am trying to not focus solely on this as I have a list of other things to focus on. I'll have to just cross whatever bridges along the journey when I come to them.

Can I Have Your Undivided Attention?

Have you ever been on the phone with someone, and right in the middle of your conversation, right when you are in mid-sentence, the person you are talking to becomes engaged in a-whole-nother conversation with someone else? And I'm not talking about the usual, "YOU BETTA PUT THAT DOWN, RIGHT NOW!... I'm sorry girl, now what were you saying?" Oh no. I'm talking about a full fledged conversation with another adult! That C, that somehow always wiggles its way into the dialog between A & B. Well, this is what happens everytime I'm on the phone with my grandmother. Never fails. I'll be pouring my heart out to her about something and either at the point where I am really thinking she's feeling me or the point where I'm expecting her to reassure me, she chimes out with something about a computer, a pen, a "fill in the blank", which is usually directed at my granddaddy. And its not one or two words, its more like 3 or 4 back and forth sentences. Sometimes I feel like asking her if she can politely ask him to shut the fuck up until she gets off the phone. And then I wonder if he even initiates the interruption. Maybe she zones out way ahead of time and is relieved to have him come in the room so she can entertain herself. Maybe she's tired of hearing (or not) me talk about my issues. Hell, maybe she just isn't interested at all or maybe what I have to say just really isn't all that important to her.

It reminds me of the day that I called her after my dad's doctor informed me that he was dying. It was unexpected news. Not because I didn't know he was dying, but because I wasn't expecting him to be near death at that particular time. When I had spoken with him two weeks earlier he didn't sound like he was in the best shape, but he told me that he was fine and would be released from the hospital the next day. Now, some doctor was telling me that his complications were too severe for surgery and that his only option was to be taken to hospice and to be made as comfortable as possible. I was shaken by the thought that I'd have to deal with a 4th death of an immediate family member within a 3 1/2 year period.

I called my grandmother and I tried to get the words out. I managed to tell her that I had gotten some news about my dad, and that he was doing really bad, and that I needed to go see him, but I was constantly interrupted due to her ongoing conversation with a machanic. I waited on the phone for a couple of minutes while she carried on her conversation, before I suggested that maybe I should call her back. She agreed that, yes, I should call her back.

I can't even explain how I felt. Not having anyone else to confide in. Having the one person that I thought I could confide in not realize that I was in distress and really needed her in that moment. Growing up, I went unheard. The expression of opinions/thoughts/feelings by children are often viewed as back talk, so I stopped speaking out and just internalized everything that I ever felt or experienced. As an adult, I still feel like I go unheard, especially by the people that I want to truly hear me.

That's how it is with my grandmother. Its not like she's this little old lady who has selective hearing. She's a fully functioning 69 year old who could pass for a 39 year old. I expect her to be present during our conversations. I expect her to recognize when I really need her emotionally. I expect her to make me feel like what I have to say matters. All without me having to request that she be an active listener. Am I expecting too much?

A Natural High

Felt a bit better today. Funny how that happens... extreme lows, washed away with a sudden high. I awoke this morning and made a decision: No worrying.

Grandma stopped by today with some "get well" goodies for me and Miss J. She then took Miss J's clothes home with her and washed them for us. I made a decision to feel no guilt or shame about having to ask her if she could wash my baby's clothes, and also made a decision to recycle mine. I can wait another week or so to be completely clean.

I picked myself up, cleaned the house, and even took Miss J out to the park. It felt great just to open my blinds today. This apartment hasn't had a healthy dose of sunshine in months. And to head outside, to be amongst other people? You know today must of been a pretty good day. Although the park is literally in our backyard, we seldom venture out. Not because Miss J doesn't like being at the park, but because I have too much anxiety most of the time to be there. I didn't even reach for my scarf. I slicked some moisturizer on my half nappy-half straight hair, threw on my earrings and hit the door. No anxiety today, so why hide from the world? The both of us, sick, barking at each other, bare armed, soaking up Vitamin D, running into old friends on the slide.

Even managed to get some light reading done, in between doing a quick combing out of Miss J's mane. We would have gotten in that much needed shampoo (8 months overdue... don't ask...anxiety, remember?) if it were not bedtime by the time we made it back from grandma's. I know better than to come near that child's head with a comb and dryer at 7pm!

There's always next weekend.
