Awesome

We've come to the last Shutter Click & Chat Sunday of the year! I have had so much fun participating and I am so glad that Tameka decided to start this weekly ritual. I love taking pictures and I love seeing the amazing snap shots of others. This last task was to end with something awesome. So... here they are. Miss Thing 1 and Miss Thing 2. They came into the world 6 months ago and have been blossoming ever since. They get even more awesome each time I see them. They love to laugh and play and nibble on any little thing they can get their hands on. The perfect little dual. Thing 1 looking like daddy and Thing 2 looking like mommy and older brother. Not to mention that mohawk that Thing 2 rocks. No matter how you brush her little curls they prefer to only grow down the middle of her head and to stay spruced. As for Thing 1, her mane prefers to lay silky. Just one of the many ways that the two are both different and totally awesome.

Now, show me your awesome. To participate in Shutter Click & Chat Sundays visit Tea N Honey Bread.

The Last Christmas on The Block

It all came together quite nicely. I was a little nervous about the chicken at first because I had not tried it out before the big day. You NEVER try a new recipe on your guest before you have tried it out on yourself. That way you can adjust seasonings, make substitutes or whatever before serving it up to the masses. But just how bad could a marinated chicken breast be? I was pretty familiar with the flavors before hand, prayed that they actually would all work well together, and they did. A hardy meal, made with love and received with great pleasure. A wonderful way to celebrate our last Christmas in this house.

Before we got the party started, we took the time that morning to open gifts.

Miss J had a good time reading the To:/From: tags on her gifts before tearing through the paper. After discovering her new jeans she didn't waist any time calling her aunt and thanking her.

Then, once my grandparents arrived she opened the gifts from them so that she could thank them in person.

You can never go wrong with Hanna Montana cowboy boots! When it comes to Miss J, you can never go wrong with Hanna Montana anything. She was eager to slip her tootsies in them and strut her stuff. In fact, she strutted her stuff in those boots for the rest of the night.

I hope that you found yourself all wrapped up in a happy holiday celebration that yielded lots of smiles and lots of love.

Friday Fill-Ins

1. I must take at least one trip to Africa before I die.

2. You can't stop the music.

3. I wish I never had to buy high priced textbooks again.

4. Education has helped me change my life.

5. I know the song Twinkle Twinkle Little Star by heart :).

6. If I weren't so afraid, I would relocate to another state after graduation.

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to enjoying a little "me" time since Miss J is spending the night with grandma, tomorrow my plans include sleeping in and Sunday, I want to turn back the clock to a pre-Christmas kitchen!

Happy Holidays!

Hoping all of your hard work pays off and all of those plans unfold beautifully as we all prepare to celebrate the holidays in our own special ways. I am looking forward to welcoming my loved ones and gathering around good food and good times.

I wish you all a happy holidays and I am looking forward to sharing the memories with you when we all return to the blogosphere.

I Am Not Alone

Not that I even want to think about Him or continue this debate, I am delighted that he will be but a distance memory after tomorrow. I just merely wanna bring attention to the fact that difference and acceptance is really a wonderful thing. The flow of opinions, traditions, and practices are endless, therefore its good to keep in mind that there is never just one way of doing anything... and that just because you enjoy your way, that every other way doesn't happen to be the wrong way.

That's all... a special thanks to the Immoral Matriarch for being "her" beautiful and honest self.

Merry Fashionista and a Happy New Year!

Mini wine glasses. Glued to the lips of 21 5 year olds. Filled with apple cider of course, at least that's what it said on the bottle.

Cider, mixed with a little excitement and good friends does this to some little people. Miss J always enjoys a good party. I still can't believe we managed to go to 20 birthday parties last semester. That was just insane. But, all good fun. Now she gets to continue this happiness while making new memories. This New Years party is the second classroom celebration so far. I think I have gotten use to the way they do things in Kindergarten. A quick 20 minute celebration and you are out the door, so that the teachers can prepare for the afternoon class. During the preschool years, we'd have potlucks. All the parents would bring a dish, we'd gather to hear our children sing holiday songs, then feast on cultural goodness. Now, its just fruit and drinks for the kids and its all over. Maybe I should be happy that I am not required to cook anything, but I kind of miss that whole "family" atmosphere I guess.

After all of the toasts and fruit indulgence, the kids met back on the rug for their good-by song, to receive their Friday Folders from the teacher and a hug and candy cane from Miss J.

I managed to find BLUE candy canes, if you hadn't already noticed from my table setting. Can you believe it. I almost jumped up and down in the store when my grandmother showed them to me. I bought 3 boxes of 12 when I probably only needed 1 or 2. After placing them on the tree and a few on the table I had too many left over. What am I going to do with all of these blueberry candy canes? I never intended on eating then, I just needed them to add to my decor. Then I started counting. 18, 19... darn... let me grab some from the tree. 20, 21. We all know that a holiday celebrating is never complete without at least 1 candy cane.

Sights of the Season

So, can you tell that I am excited? I have gone ahead and set the table already. I don't know why, since I don't even plan for the family to be seated here. I wanna put the spread on the table, fill those plates and high tail it to the comfy sectional for a Christmas movie of choice. We might take in a little Grinch or run through a couple of Tyler Perry's flicks. Nothing like a good Tyler play to bring on the laughter, love, and everything that is our little family.

I picked up this Snowman dinnerwear a couple of years ago at Target. I'm one of those people who will buy every matching piece, even though I don't need to. I almost bought this big coordinating Snowman cookie jar, knowing darn well that no cookie would have ever seen the inside of that thing. Miss J isn't big on cookies and I'm not either so it would have just been another prop. Just like the salt and pepper shakers in the middle of the table, lol. Not a sprinkle of salt nor pepper!

Early Expressions of Love

To: Mommy
From: Jalia

She put this in my hand when I picked her up from the after school program the other day. She was excited to tell me all about the surprise she made for me and how she wanted me to open it as soon as we got home.

Shouldn't I wait until Christmas to open it. You don't want me to put it under the tree with the other stuff?

No. I want you to open it now.

Ok.

See mom, this is a candle holder. You take the candle and you drop it in like this. See? Do you like it?

Yes, I love it!

And this is a... a um... its a holder too. I can put my pennies in here.

But I thought it was for me (I think to myself)

See, I painted it gold. You like it mom?

Yep, I like it.

We inhaled the sweet vanilla scent of the tea light...

Can you light it mommy? It smells like our car smells after we get it washed.

Did your little ones create anything extra special for you this season?

Current Inventory: 1

No, I didn't make a sale. I have decided to pass the source of my finger cramps on to a deserving little boy who is cuter than Benjamin Button. Everyone, meet Little Monkey

Son of Mr. Tuffy and Mrs. Round Peg, and little brother of Rorysaurus, over at Mostly Medical Misadventures & Mishaps. In case you can't tell, he's celebrating his first birthday and a happy recovery from numerous cranial operations this year. You see, Little Monkey was born with non-syndromatic synostosis. His skull didn't develop properly, which left him sporting a spiked skull at birth. But look at him, wasn't he ultra adorable?

Little Monkey had surgery and grew into those bones.

And then he had another surgery...

And he got to wear the coolest hat EVER!

And now, its like this rough start to life never even happened.

We will be heading over to his place today to help celebrate his first year and to welcome his Uncle Needlenoggin home from the hospital. You can get introduced to this extraordinary family here. Through every trial and tribulation of this year, their smiles have overshadowed their tears. They are THEE most resilient people I know. I love em' to death. These folks are my Cal family and each day that they "keep on keepin' on", they inspire me to continue to overcome.

Future Denied

"Parents and teachers are absolutely infuriated with the district, but officials say they have no choice but to sell off its school buildings in order to get the cash it so desperately needs... 13 West Contra Costa County schools are on the chopping block. The list includes Kennedy High School, two middle schools, and 11 elementary schools."

So much for the No Child Left Behind Act. California's multimillion dollar deficit has succeeded in placing a multitude of futures in jeopardy. Apparently, the closing of an elementary school will yield $300, 000 and the closing of a jr. high or high school will yield $800, 000. The district has placed a bounty on the heads of California children in order to save itself from the clutches of the state, but actually, this is just an act to save the state itself. I am truly speechless right now and saddened. When the talk of school closures first started circulating it was my alma mater, along with two additional high schools that were on the chopping block. I now know that they were just a few on a growing list. A growing list of inner city schools.

How, exactly, are students suppose to learn in overcrowed classrooms? How are they expected to get to schools outside of their neighborhoods when their own schools are within walking distance? Who is going to protect them when turf wars break out between rival gang members (because they will)? How many students will actually graduate and go on to college under these conditions, these pressures? These are just some of the questions that parents are asking, and have been asking since day 1. I also have to ask these questions because in no way is the closing of all of these schools going to have a good outcome. Yes, perhaps money will be saved, but the cost is much to high for them to do this. It is said that education is the key. Well, what happens when someone comes in and steals that key?

Yesterday, parents, teachers and community members voiced their concerns to administrators and were told that there was no other way at this point. I got on the phone as soon as the news came over the airways that Kennedy High School was among the schools that will be closed. This is not my alma mater, but my grandmother taught there for a number of years and my bff's cousins are/were scheduled to attend next year. My grandmother couldn't believe the news. A place that she had served severly handicapped kids is scheduled to be no more. As I spoke with her and texted the bff back and forth, the news coverage continued as the students exited the building with their "Honk to Save Us" and "Save Our Futures" signs in protest, chanting "SAVE OUR SCHOOLS."

Seeing this took me back to my freshman year at Richmond High School, back when the school superintendent had made off with the district's funds leaving them in debt. As a result, schools in the West Contra Costa district looked like they were from the set of Dangerous Minds. Outdated textbooks, unoccupiable classrooms, more students than people to teach them and not enough guidance counselors to guide students into the phase that preceds high school. It was pretty horrible. So, the leadership class of RHS planned a walk out and rally at the capitol. We met with state leaders and community organizers and set out on a mission to get the district's debt forgiven. This was a time before the Governator was even a thought. On the day of, students in each high school walked out (which pissed off administrators because the school loses money when students are absent), we hopped on busses and made the journey to Sacramento. We were joined there by all kinds of organizations, one of which was a senior center in my neighborhood. It was a great turn out and a bold example of what education really meant to not just the kids, but everyone in the community. I think there is a strong ideology that the parents of inner city kids are too cracked out to give a damn about whether their kids get educated or not, because, of course, they themselves are uneducated. That isn't the whole truth. We where heard that day and nearly all of the districts debt was forgiven.

Today, the students of Kennedy High School and some parents stood on the front lines with their signs preparing to walk a mile to city hall. I will have to tune in to the next news cast for more updates. Police had been called before the students left and were probably in route as they marched.

Its just really sad that THIS is what we have to endure, all in the name of securing something that is a right. You have to struggle and fight, fight and struggle, and then struggle and fight some more just to be able to play in the same game as other students from other areas. We aren't even going to talk about getting on the same playing field, because you can't play until you have a spot on the team.

All of this has prompted me to really think long and hard and consider applying to become a part of Teach for America. This organization places recent college grads in underprivledged schools for a 2 year commitement to make a difference in the lives of students by becoming educators. Now, teaching has never been one of my career goal, I have always believed that I lack the patience required to teach, however, I am starting to rethink this. More and more, I am learning more about myself and what I really have a knack for. I think I am a closeted activist. As much as I have tried to fight this "Berkeley" trait, its just deep rooted and calling my name. My heart is being pulled toward working for sexual assult survivors, I think I may have to include the fight for equal treatment of inner city children as well. Such pressing issues that need immediate attention. Voices dying to be heard. Lives that need to be saved. Futures that need to be granted access.

The Holiday Menu

Just one more week until...

Children scurry over to the tree to rip through carefully taped paper;

Loved ones pour into your living room... some of who may not have been invited;

Men congregate around the tv making all kinds of joyful noise rooting for their favorite teams;

And you, your mother and/or grandmother in the kitchen putting the finishing touches on your second holiday feast.

Seems like it was just yesterday that we were slaving over a big bird and all the Thanksgiving fixins. Now its time to do it all over again.

There will be no turkey or ham here. No more dressing. The greens didn't even make my list. I am keeping it short, yummy and simple. Three delicacies, a glass of cider and dessert... that's it.

I am planning to have chicken breast, marinated in Kraft Catalina salad dressing, grilled to perfection. Topped with a bruschetta made of diced tomatoes, shredded mozzarella cheese and basil. Along side this will be some linguine, tossed in a sauce of stewed tomatoes, ground turkey, onions, a little bit of garlic, diced black olives and basil. To complete my dinner I will throw in some Del Monte canned green beans and garlic bread. A scoop of Peppermint ice cream over a slice of pound cake and a nice cold glass of apple cider and voila! Christmas dinner is served.

What's your Christmas spread?

I need a more presentable way of photographing these blankets. I might have to borrow my little twin nieces and put them to work. I am pretty sure the blankets would look much better hanging off of Thing 1 and Thing 2, rather than hanging off the back of my couch.

Two days of work and I now have a finished product. Not much different than those I made for the girls or the two blue and white blankets that I made before that. A 30-34 inch granny square with variations in color placement. I think that's what I like about the granny square. Its quick, and although you get the same shape, you are in complete control of the pattern. You can do all one color, or you can add as many colors as you'd like. You don't have to really take measurements with a square, you just keep adding rows until its as big as you want it, always yielding a perfect square. It makes a beautiful addition to any bed.

This blanket was among the first that I made for Miss J when I was still learning how to make a granny square.

I forgot how much work crocheting is on the hands. I thought I would have finished on Monday, but I had to keep stopping because my fingers kept cramping up. I hope this wont be a continuous issue if I decide to go ahead and stock up on blankets. I can't wait to get more materials. If I have to do one more blue and white blanket before I do any other color I might have to hurt myself. Luckily Miss J has asked for one in pink, and some other color that I can't remember. I am going to go find the brightest, hottest pink I can. I have to take a short break from the pastels.

So what do you think? Could you see yourself tucking your little one into a granny square at night? Also, if I go ahead with this whole Etsy store thing, what the heck am I gonna call it? I have been thinking for at least 6 months and nothing. Right now, pictures are stored in a folder called Schemes of Love. Any suggestions?

Unusual Winter Weather

Rain, hail, snow... all in the Bay Area over the course of a couple of days. The rain and the hail are native, but the snow? Yesterday there were reports of snow in the Oakland hills. We are use to rising to meet frost covered cars and lawns, but being able to roll a snow ball anywhere in the immediate Bay Area is unheard of. We've been here before. I'll never forget the year that swimming pools were frozen over. Just a sign of the times. Unstable weather patters. Global warming really is upon us. In a few more years, we may not have to travel to Reno, NV or Lake Tahoe to play in the snow, and this will in no way be a good thing.

Cue the tall mug of chocolately delicious warmth.

I thought I was going to freeze in mid stride when I went to go pick up Miss J from her after school program. Ice cold rain, paired with an ice cold breeze... time for mittens, hats, scarves, can I get a ski mask?! Its not like its been this way for a couple of weeks and I am finding it hard to adjust. No. It just literally snowed today in some areas and even the areas that are suppose to get snow in Nor Cal are getting it way ahead of schedule. I some times feel like we have started the "snow" ball rolling and soon it will all just spiral completely out of control. Each year the weather is noticeably different. Colder winters, hotter summers and unseasonal springs and falls. Not to mention, stronger storms in the coastal regions. Hopefully we can somehow put the breaks on this destruction of the earth.

What changes in weather patters have you noticed in your area, if any?

I Thought That Was a Shoe

Who knew all of that 'duck and cover' training would come in handy?

Its Monday

And I don't have a care in the world, a few worries, but not one care. That's what happens when you are coming down from 12 months of continuous schooling. Yes, 12 months, straight, with just a few holidays, of which summer vacation was not included. I spent the whole weekend in bed. If I could have cooked from the bed that is how I would have chosen to feed Miss J.

I'm free to relax this week. Miss J will be in school, so that just leaves me, the tv, some good music, my yarn and crochet hook. I am free to spend full days with myself, letting myself know just how much I love me. Not something that I get to do often so I take advantage whenever the opportunity permits itself. I started a new blanket yesterday, which should be finished today. Hopefully I will get to share it with you tomorrow and you can tell me what you think.

My Bad... I Am Kind of a Newbie

Blogging 101:

If you plan to have folks come over to visit and possibly follow you, ya might wanna have a site feed that actually works!

No silly, not YOU... me <----

Of course your blog feed works. Its me that made the newbie mistake. Sorry! My bad! I finally figured it out, only after being told 2-3 weeks ago by Tameka and then told again yesterday by Mama Shujaa AND then told again by Renee today. I fixed it! Now everyone who follows me should see all of my posts.

See what had happened was...

When I created a feed at Feedburner for my subscription link I ended up creating TWO. Once I figured out how the whole subscription thing worked I chose one feed and deleted the other. I must have kept my blog linked up to the feed that I deleted, which resulted in no updates. When Tameka told me that she wasn't getting updates, she told me that she wasn't getting email alerts telling her when I posted, so I thought she was having a problem with her subscription. Then Mama Shujaa told me that she was following me, but not seeing any of my recent posts. Lightbulb moment!

So, come 1, come all... I'm here! I'm here! Stop by often/subscribe/follow me.

A Little Taste of Style

Last week, over at MyBrownBaby, I entered to win one of these adorable personalized lunchboxes from LaTonya Yvette's great Che' Demi's Boutique. To my surprise, I got a "you're a winner" email from Denene informing me that we can now retire Miss J's plain Jane lunch bag for one that will surely set her apart from all of her friends around the lunch table. I shared the news with her and she picked the one pictured above. It will be personalized with none other than a "J" =).

A great big thank you once again to both Denene for hosting the giveaway and to LaTonya for her generosity. Miss J will carry this lunchbox with pride and most importantly, in style!
