What's New?

Well, I got my first written response from the state. So, far, I think I have sent out 4 or 5 applications to various locations that have vacancies for the position that I tested for. Unfortunately, this particular location did not offer me an interview. I'm not too bent out of shape about it, perhaps because there are still locations that I am waiting to hear from. The way that the ranking system works is tricky, with some locations seeking the best of the best, meaning, they are only looking for folks who rank in the top 3. That wasn't me this time. We'll see what happens...

Seems like my life has been revolving around job search. Its really depressing. To sit around with nothing to do, in someone else's space - I have been bored out of my damn mind, and when I'm not bored, I'm depressed, and when I'm not depressed, I'm irritable - which is a symptom of depression - so, I guess I'm basically just frickin' bored and depressed the majority of the time. I did get out of the house Friday night to have a couple of drinks and some adult time with the mamas.

Its always nice to be in great company, and my UCB family is always great company. But now the weekend is over, and its back to focusing on trying to make things better.

I have been completely neglecting my business, but hopefully I will feel more like engaging in some yarn play soon. I am finishing up a pretty pink and white blanket that I am hoping to add to the shop by next week. Then maybe I can get started on the lavendar and white blanket, and maybe it will be the correct size when I am done! The pink and white blanket is less baby and more preschooler. I must have been crocheting with a tired hand. Its still a beautiful creation. I will show you all once I have some pictures.

How was your weekend? What's new?

A Change In Scenery

For this to be such a place of comfort, I'm not feeling all that comfortable here anymore. Don't worry, none of you did anything. Its not the readers/visitors/followers, its the aesthetic of this place. I'm way over it! This green and purple, and the chick up top enjoying the acupuncture gots to go. That heffa ain't me!! Hmph, I STILL haven't made it to the spa!

Its time for A Place of Comfort to get a makeover. I need to be inspired to share my life here. I like to look at my blog when I'm not writing. Make sure everything is in its place and just hang out for a while. Lately, I haven't wanted to hang out here. I've been doing more hanging at my other blog... that one's a secret.

Can any of you help me bring the comfort back to this place? Who do you know and love that puts their all into blog design?

My 200th Post!!

Just think. We would have been celebrating a lot sooner had I not fallen off the face of the earth. Don't worry, I'm semi-back now, and with good news to share...

First, I bought my cap & gown last week, along with a hat and extra tassel for Miss J so that she can get all dressed up and walk the stage with me. Since her school isn't doing a Kindergarten graduation we're gonna kick it up a notch. These ceremonies will prove to be some of my grandest memories as I'll retell the story to her as she grows, look back at the photos and realize just how much of a role model I truly was to my child, and that I laid the ground work for her to move forward in life. I did that! All me! I am so grateful to have been a parent while at Cal. I couldn't have become a mother at a better time. Because of my opportunity, I was able to pass along vital lessons and opportunities to my baby. It just doesn't get any better than that ya'll.

I created some photo announcements through Vista Print and I am looking forward to loading up the mailbox, which for now, will be the equivalent of me shouting from the rooftop that I've made it! Though I still haven't quite figured out what comes next, I'm ready to move on to the next stage of life. And not a moment too soon, since I'll be turning 25 in 7 days! And Miss J will be turning 6 in 53 days! We are both getting old. Don't get me wrong, I know that with age comes wisdom. I accept that. I don't have a problem turning 25... I just have a problem having a 6 year old. What happened to my baby? Where did she go? She's so independent, and so... her, that one day I am gonna reach for her and she's gonna tell me in a sweet voice that she doesn't need me anymore. Because that's just the type of person she is. The kind that will choose a college on the other side of the world just to get the hell away from mom, and as far away from mom as humanly possible.

Ahhhh... kids. Speaking of which, have a look at Thing 1 and Thing 2...

Talk about growing up fast! They are sitting, rolling around the house in their walkers, pulling up, crawling, fighting with each other, extremely concerned when the other cries, has to have as many turns in the lap as the other, and I am sure the list goes on and on. What still shocks me the most about these two though is their personalities. While Thing 2 is now growing curly hair in a mohawk like her sister, Thing 1 is growing teeth. 5 OF THEM!! Like, how the heck does a kid grow 5 teeth in like a month?? I was super shocked. Got little Miss Thing 2 playing catch up in that department as she is still gumming her food.

Miss J and I hope to one day be blessed with a little play mate of our own... one day soon might I add, because as much as I am wishing that I could slow Miss J's growth process, I DO NOT wanna be looking at someone else for like, another 10 or 12 or 14 years after Miss J has left the nest. Uh uh, nope. So yeah, Ms Bar B is also putting in some work in the love department this year.... more on that later.

See, What Had Happened Was...

I know I told you that I'd be back last week when I was on Spring Break, but I was all busy sleeping, watching movies, and attending my friend's son's baseball games trying to power through readings in preparation for an upcoming midterm and encourage myself to complete a month old paper for the same class. Because the midterm hasn't happened yet and neither has the paper, I am not officially "here", but still in a mode of preparation and self encouragement.

Now that that's outta the way... how've ya'll been??? I miss you a bunch! I hope I haven't missed too much excitement to get all caught up on. I don't have much excitement to report at the moment since studying is everything BUT exciting. I did get orders for 2 baby blankets though... now I just gotta find time to get them done before their future owners enter the world.

I also decided to get a haircut this week. I'll be in Wildboy's chair tomorrow morning. I am loving my curls, but there is just something about waves that I equally love. I gotta have em'. So I'm gonna employ my Ex to school me on how to "train" my hair, which I already know is gonna involve a lot of brushing. I was gonna let it grow out until graduation and possibly get some baby locs, but at the rate my hair is currently growing, by the time I'm ready to walk the stage my growth will more than likely be right back where it is now if I don't decide to cut again before then. We'll see what happens.

This is the growth so far. I went and let Wildboy clean me up in the back a couple of weeks ago.

Tomorrow I will be looking more like this...

So, not completely bald again, but just enough for me to start brushing the hell out of it and tying it up at night in hopes of getting it to eventually look like this...

Alrighty then... that's all for now. I shall return soon...

Just Touching Bases

I know I've been missing in action for a while... not stopping by to visit some of you as much as I usually do, and not posting as regularly as I have been. I have been busy trying to survive this semester in tact... or at least, I have been planning an attack on the semester that is suppose to help me conquer it once and for all.

I really can't wait to be back to my some-what normal self again so that I can engage more with all of you. I have some interesting things on the brain, like:

  • How my ex-boyfriend is A LOT like Greg House
  • Black men being intimidated by empowered black women
  • "Happy Pills"
  • Being one of a collective who's exit plan is still a work in progress
  • My new hair growth =)
These are just a few of the ingredients stewing around up there. Since next week is Spring Break, I am hoping to be able to get back on track with my school work AND spend some time with all of you as well. I have been able to get out of the house a bit to clear my head with my extended Cal family and now its time for me to reconvene with my virtual family.

See ya in a few.

An Update

I've realized that I worried you all and just left some of you hanging. I apologize for that, and want to start off by assuring you that Miss J and I are doing ok. We have family that read my blog and are aware of the situation, so if things become uneasy again here in our home we have a couple of safe places to retreat to. But you know what? I don't plan on doing any retreating. Instead, I plan to stand up and fight, because... well, I've already laid down and taken it. Its time for me to advocate for myself. I have victim's rights dammit!

Monday morning I headed straight to UCPD and filed a harassment complaint. The Officer I met with pretty much reprimanded me for not filing for sole custody of the baby way before now, if in deed the situation was as bad as I was telling her, and my envelope of documentation, and his police record was telling her it was. I broke down in tears and explained to her that I am definitely all about preventative measures, but when you are mentally fragile and someone is constantly mentally abusing you its very hard to move forward and push past the fear, anxiety and depression. Not to mention the fact that the DA had never gotten in touch with me about my previous case as I was told he would, therefore crushing my faith and trust in the structure of the law. She understood and reassured me that she was in no way blaming me for enduring my abuse or saying that I was completely bad for sending my child off to the home of a man whose companionship likes to bag up weed in his living room, just pointing out that as a mother, its my responsibility to make sure that my child is always safe, and if I don't feel like he can provide a safe atmosphere then I have the right to not let her be a part of a potentially dangerous situation. I agreed. Finally, someone was on the same page as I was about the strong need to not just wait until something bad happened, but to do everything in my power to make sure that day never comes.

So, after opening a new case to supplement the existing one, I headed over to the Gender Equity and Resource Center to seek out guidance on getting a restraining order. I did a bit of research on Sunday and found the Family Violence Law Center, which is a non-profit in my county that assists people dealing with family violence in getting restraining orders and custody sorted out. And they work with the GendEq Center. I discovered that there's such a thing as a Domestic Violence Restraining Order, and I now have those forms, all "hella many" pages of them half way filled out. I have a follow up appointment with an advocate on campus and I am in the process of setting up an appointment with the advocate from the Family Violence Law Center, who is in a position to help me with completing and filing the forms, can accompany me to court and fight with me to regain control and some possible closure to this situation.

We'll see how this whole thing plays out. He texted me again tonight asking if I can bring Miss J over on Saturday (in which he spelled her name wrong, don't worry, we're not gonna go there, ok?)... and then called me. I have not, nor do I have any intention, on responding to either. I'm physically and mentally done. Until I can file this restraining order packet, and until I find someone to supervise the temporary visitation that will probably come with the restraining order/temporary custody arrangements, the contact between he and I, thus he and Miss J will be cut off. I just can't deal with it right now nor is it wise to be talking to/traveling to his home under the circumstances!

As the process unfolds I will keep you updated, as not to worry you all half to death about our safety. I am hoping that he will just stay on his side of town and allow us to stay on ours. And I am also hoping that he has not decided to one-up me by starting a custody case of his own, since he says he has been talking to a lawyer. We shall see...
