See, What Had Happened Was...

I know I told you that I'd be back last week when I was on Spring Break, but I was all busy sleeping, watching movies, and attending my friend's son's baseball games trying to power through readings in preparation for an upcoming midterm and encourage myself to complete a month old paper for the same class. Because the midterm hasn't happened yet and neither has the paper, I am not officially "here", but still in a mode of preparation and self encouragement.

Now that that's outta the way... how've ya'll been??? I miss you a bunch! I hope I haven't missed too much excitement to get all caught up on. I don't have much excitement to report at the moment since studying is everything BUT exciting. I did get orders for 2 baby blankets though... now I just gotta find time to get them done before their future owners enter the world.

I also decided to get a haircut this week. I'll be in Wildboy's chair tomorrow morning. I am loving my curls, but there is just something about waves that I equally love. I gotta have em'. So I'm gonna employ my Ex to school me on how to "train" my hair, which I already know is gonna involve a lot of brushing. I was gonna let it grow out until graduation and possibly get some baby locs, but at the rate my hair is currently growing, by the time I'm ready to walk the stage my growth will more than likely be right back where it is now if I don't decide to cut again before then. We'll see what happens.

This is the growth so far. I went and let Wildboy clean me up in the back a couple of weeks ago.

Tomorrow I will be looking more like this...

So, not completely bald again, but just enough for me to start brushing the hell out of it and tying it up at night in hopes of getting it to eventually look like this...

Alrighty then... that's all for now. I shall return soon...

Friday Fill-Ins

1. Why do we have to have daylight savings?

2. The need to carry my cell phone and the need to always have lipgloss in my purse are now habits.

3. I have a new dress for one of my graduation ceremonies.

4. I had never heard the phrase "just for shits and giggles" and it cracked me up immediately.

5. For now, I will do things the way I always do.

6. How was I to know that my coat had pockets if the pockets were stitched closed?

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to doing the usual, tomorrow my plans include doing some chores and Sunday, I want to hook up with my friend for a photoshoot!

Damn You Jenny

Miss J: Why aren't you gonna wear granny's coat?

Me: That's not granny's coat. I already gave it back to her. That's my coat.

Miss J: When did you get that coat?

Me: I've had it for a while, I just don't wear it.

Miss J: Why?

Me: B: Because its too big.

Miss J: Well, maybe when you get bigger you can wear it.

Me: I don't wanna get bigger, I wanna get smaller!

Miss J: Smaller? Like a kid?

Me: No, I wanna lose some of my pounds.

Miss J: Well, you need to call right now.

Just Touching Bases

I know I've been missing in action for a while... not stopping by to visit some of you as much as I usually do, and not posting as regularly as I have been. I have been busy trying to survive this semester in tact... or at least, I have been planning an attack on the semester that is suppose to help me conquer it once and for all.

I really can't wait to be back to my some-what normal self again so that I can engage more with all of you. I have some interesting things on the brain, like:

  • How my ex-boyfriend is A LOT like Greg House
  • Black men being intimidated by empowered black women
  • "Happy Pills"
  • Being one of a collective who's exit plan is still a work in progress
  • My new hair growth =)
These are just a few of the ingredients stewing around up there. Since next week is Spring Break, I am hoping to be able to get back on track with my school work AND spend some time with all of you as well. I have been able to get out of the house a bit to clear my head with my extended Cal family and now its time for me to reconvene with my virtual family.

See ya in a few.

Friday Fill-Ins

1. When I look to the left, I see a collection of things scattered about on my night stand.

2. The kitchen is the room that has the best view in my home.

3. Let it work the way that I want it to.

5. Creating a peaceful society is a responsibility that all qualified citizens must share.

6. If you have any questions feel free to give me a call.

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to going to a karaoke bar with the Cal mommies, tomorrow my plans include getting some academic work done and going to the Vagina Monologues with Cal mommies and Sunday, I want to take Miss J to a birthday party for Zach, possibly with other Cal mommies, lol!

Little Asian Girl in a Bubble

Sometimes I have to keep reminding myself that not everything in life is obvious, that our notion of "common sense" is simply the core of what ideologies are based on, and that in a world of difference we will never stop learning from each other.

Asian Girl In a Bubble: Are you a professor?

Woman I Once Had a Class With: No, I'm a student.

GIRL: Oh, what's your major?

WOMAN: I'm majoring in African American Studies.

GIRL: Oh... why? What ethnicity are you?

WOMAN: Well... I'm Asian and African American, and my family is from Hawaii

GIRL: You don't look African America... I mean, your hair is straight and your skin color... you don't look African American. I think you look Asian... Japanese?

WOMAN: Yeah, Japanese, how'd you know?

GIRL: I'm Japanese and I can see how you look more Asian... you don't look African American.

The Woman I Once Had a Class With proceeded to give the Asian Girl In a Bubble a lesson in both African/African American history that began in the 1600s and ended with an explanation of how African American people can have blood from all over the world, and how they don't just come in one complexion or have one hair texture, and how a person could be a natural blond and have blue eyes and still be an African American.

Sadly, that must of been the first time that Asian Girl in a Bubble had heard any of this because she still had a hard time comprehending what she'd just been told. She just couldn't "see" it, and she couldn't understand just how two different cultures could come together and create one or a person that possessed both. As I sat next to Asian Girl in a Bubble on that 25 minute bus ride home, one minute I wanted to burst out laughing and the next I wanted to turn around and shake her, but I had to resist doing either since I had my earbuds in and wasn't even suppose to be listening in on their conversation. I found myself turning toward the window and mouthing wow a lot. And raising my eyebrow a lot. And trying to stop making eye contact with the Woman I Once Had a Class With. And constantly adjusting the volume on my iPod.

GIRL: So, what are you gonna do with that (Referring to a BA in African American Studies)?

WOMAN: I plan to teach. I am working as a nurse now, and its just much more beneficial for me to get my degree and teach. Do some traveling, possibly teach in another country.

GIRL: Oh... I thought you were just doing it for fun...

Another lengthy lesson on how much hard work earning a degree is in general, and how obtaining a degree in African American Studies is no cake walk, and...

You get the picture. I don't know all the struggles around the world, but I was under the assumption that mostly everyone was aware of the race relations within the US, especially concerning African Americans... guess not.

Friday Fill-Ins

And...here we go!

1. Sharing information and resources with other mommies who are dealing with the same legal situation that I am was my last random act of kindness.

2. Another place of comfort that I'd like to be in right now would be a spa.

3. Sometimes its hard to see things clearly when you are entangled in matters of the heart.

4. Coffee, tea or hot chocolate... today, I'd like some hot chocolate.

5. My mind and my body seem to be on separate paths.

6. Our circle of friends reminds me that there is a lot of love out there.

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to making a decision to either make the 6 hr drive to attend Zachary's funeral tomorrow or not, tomorrow my plans include either being on the road or devoting time to getting caught up in my classes and Sunday, I want to work on losing my defeatist attitude!

Communicating Loss to the Young Mind

Since the day that I found out, I have been trying to figure out the best way to break the news to Miss J. I think I have been mostly worried about creating a certain level of fear within her by revealing to her that her friend has died. A sadness or panic that would somehow change the way she functions in her day to day life. However, I've come to realize that I am mainly projecting my own sadness and reaction to this event onto her. So, last night, with my grandmother there for support, I put those fears aside, grabbed Maria Shiver's What's Heaven?, a Goodbye booklet that the kids created for each other upon graduating from Preschool, and had "the talk" with her about Zach's passing.

I just came right out with it and told her that he had died. She asked why. I told her he got hurt in an accident. She wanted to know why the doctors couldn't help him. I told her he was hurt too badly and that most of the time doctors can help people when they get hurt, but sometimes when people are hurt really really really badly, the doctors can't help them. I told her he went to go live with Jesus now, then asked her if she remembered what Heaven was. She said, "in the clouds, like where my other granny is?" Then she wanted to know why he'd have to go there, and why granny had to go there, and I just told her it was granny's time to go live with Jesus.

We read the Goodbye booklet, going to the page that Zach created for her, and reading his message to her, "To: Jalia. You're my bestest friend ever!" followed by a drawing of a heart with an arrow going through it. She seemed content with it, content with the happy memory, but a little sad at the same time. I think the ideology of happy memories is what made it a bit easier for me to talk to her about this difficult subject. I was able to give her the truth, which I think is very important, and ease her mind and provide comfort by redirecting her mind to happier times and situations surrounding Zach. She is a pretty strong girl, I could even go as far to say, she is a bit stronger that her mother in certain areas, so I had an idea of what she'd be able to handle when it came to facts or details and what she could not.

I asked her if she'd like to go say goodbye to Zach on Saturday, and she first said that she wasn't sure, then asked where we'd say goodbye at. I reminded her of how we went to a church to say goodbye to her granny, and that the same would be happening for Zach. Everyone would go to the church to tell him goodbye. She then became sort of excited at the thought of "going to the church" because that would require going to the store to get new "church shoes" since her's no longer fit.

I do not yet know if we will be able to make the trip since its 6hrs away down in Southern California. However, with everything in me, I want to make that trip. I want to be able to say goodbye to Zach, to have a sense of closure for myself, to show support to the family as I don't know if any other "Cal family" will be able to attend, and to provide Miss J this final opportunity. Again, I think attending would be more for my own healing than for hers. I will have to make a decision today because I would want to leave tonight as opposed to tomorrow since the service begins at noon. I wouldn't want to spend 6 hrs in the car and then have to get right out and attend the service. I would want both myself and Miss J to be well rested and prepared for the day. I am giving myself the next 6 hours to come to a decision.

A Small Light at the End of the Tunnel

Featured today...

Weeks ago, I was contacted by Tabitha of From Single to Married, a newlywed who is hoping to become a mommy soon.  Like many other women looking to be bitten by the baby bug, Tabitha sought out the stories of other mommies.  Stories of pregnancy, birthing, parenting, and of course, above all else, how to get the bun in the oven, since she is now at this stage in the game. She took these stories and created a space for experience: Experiencing Motherhood.  Here, women share their stories about the joy, pain, humor, complication, and everything else that is pregnancy, birthing, adoption, parenting, and the experience of motherhood.

Today, the story of Miss J's birth is featured.  I tell the tale of birthing a breech baby by c-section, and all the fun that led up to that moment... and of course all the fun that followed.  Be sure to head on over and check it out.  If you would like to tell your motherhood stories and give Tabitha some advice in the process, don't be shy, just let her know.

If my time in the spot light has come and gone, and you still wanna read, then you can click here.

And please don't forget to read about our little friend Zachary Michael Cruz below... and see if you can lend your support.

Its Raining, Its Pouring... We Love You Zachary

Where do I even begin...

In the course of attempting to set visitation, physical contact and verbal communication boundaries and guidelines between myself, Miss J and her dad, it all resulted in more of the same.  Him first agreeing to these guidelines, but then not respecting the boundaries set and instead trying to overpower and threaten me...

In a final meeting with the advocate from the Family Violence Law Center, I found out that my situation DOES NOT qualify for a Domestic Violence Restraining Order.  Since he has not physically hurt me or threatened to do so within the last 3-6 months, their center can not assist me. And although their website mentions that they help with "custody" issues as well as restraining orders, they can not assist me with that either, but she did referred me to other law centers, and associates and legal clinics who may be able to.

The common theme between the advocates and the police is "custody", so my next legal option and quest is to file for sole custody of my daughter.  This is the only way to free myself from his control and to also free my daughter from this dysfunction.

After making an appointment to speak with an attorney on campus for some legal advice, talking to a few other parents who have gone through the process and getting a stern talking-to, loving support and valuable advice from the woman on campus who none of us parents would be able to survive the Cal experience without, I have decided to breathe.  I have decided to change my phone number this week.  I have decided to place his ass in the back of my mind.  I have decided that I will not let him take my degree from me.  I have decided that I will continue to seek advice from legal clinics and pick up the custody paperwork.  I have decided to call his bluff.  I have decided to deal with the custody process if he decides to file for joint custody before I earn my degree or before I find a job, as it will look better on my part (as if his part could possibly look better than mine) if I had my degree and a job before seeking sole custody so that I can further prove that I am capable of caring for and raising my child without any of his contribution.  I have decided that we will relocate to a safe and unknown location once I have completely my final courses.  I have decided that we deserve happiness.

***********************************************************

As I sat down in the office of "the woman on campus who none of us parents would be able to survive the Cal experience without", in hopes that she would be able to give me some kind of advice or list of resources that would just make him disappear out of our lives forever, or at least until Miss J's 18th birthday, I first checked in to see if she was extremely busy with more important matters.  Turns out, she was.  She was visiting the website of a Cal graduate student who was asking for donations for his son who was hit by a car on Friday.  "Frank Cruz?"  I said. That name sounds really familiar.  Then she said something else and I yelled out, "WAIT! Frank Cruz.  I know him!".  "His son was hit by a truck", she said.  "Oh my God, is he ok?"  And then she said it.  "No... he didn't make it".  And then I lost it.

Miss J, and Zachary Michael Cruz first met when they were a year old.  At the birthday party of a mutual friend.  We had hell getting all 3 to stay put on the couch long enough to take this picture.  You had the birthday girl, Miss Katie, my Jalia, who was 2 seconds away from breaking out into her Halle Berry ugly cry, and then you had the sweet and sensitive Zach.  Who wanted to stay close to dad, who wasn't cool with all that loud clapping and happy dancing going on at the party, who just wanted to stay to himself and peep the scene a bit.  But who blossomed into a fearless, bright smile having, huge heart possessing, sports loving, "Hey Barbara, guess what" telling, most wonderful little boy that you could have ever known.  It was impossible not to fall in love with someone as special and precious as Zach.

On Friday, February 27, 2009, Zach was hit by a truck while on his way to an after school program with other students and a teacher.  It is believed that he died instantly since he could not be revived by those who tried to give him CPR on the scene.  He was a happy Kindergartener and would have celebrated his 6th birthday on March 12th.

I was crushed by the news and my heart aches.  It aches for his family, it aches because his life was cut short and it aches for my daughter, because I am going to have to explain to her that the friend we saw just a couple of weeks ago in the Apple store, is now no longer alive. I will have to remind, both myself and her, to remember all the good times that we were able to spend with him, and to remember how much he said that he was enjoying his new school and his time in Kindergarten.  We will have to remember those times and to keep him in our hearts forever.

In memory of Zach, his parents have created a website, and they are asking for donations to help with the cost of Zach's funeral services.  I am opening my heart here and asking you to please help this family with anything that you can.  It would be so gratefully appreciated. If you can, please help Frank and Jodie Cruz put "our" Zach to rest by visiting www.zacharymichaelcruz.com.  And then tell a friend, and hopefully that friend will tell a friend, and so on.

I thank you so much in advance.

Thoughts

Its time for me to face another week, and I'm really not ready to do so. Time for me to perform, to be who they want me to be, and do the things that they have called on me to do, and I don't really have the energy to keep up the facade...

What happens when you've sought help, only to find out that the only help you can receive is that which you give yourself?  And what happens when you want to be a survivor, but you're gradually giving up the fight?  Is it possible to have the "fight" taken right out of you?  Does "fight" ever expire?  Why aren't people ever allowed to grow tired?  Why are they pushed and pushed and pushed to stay in until the very end of the fight, without any breaks or assistance...

I wish I could turn my thoughts off, control them, possibly learn to meditate.  There are so many thoughts in rotation, all the time, that I live life on paper.  My brain stopped collecting short-term memories some time ago, which can be kind of scary, and extremely frustrating.  If thoughts are not recorded then I have to wait for them to come back around as memories, assuming that those thoughts got encoded in the first place...

Quite honestly, I am beyond prayer.  Beyond talk of the power of God.  I saw a car with a bumper sticker that read, "Praying is Begging".  I smiled to myself and agreed...
