I Know Its Not Sunday, But... Pt: 2

Shutter Click & Chat...

Sunday is getting to be more like Shutter Click & Chat after Sundays. I couldn't resist sharing my embroidery work with you though. I didn't do it myself, but a great little place near campus has been hooking up this semester's grads with the option of getting their stoles customized. Here is a second peek at my updated piece.

New

I consider this to be a snap shot of my accomplishments while at Cal. Yes, my department is missing, and its not because I don't consider earning a degree in Gender & Women's Studies an accomplishment, I just needed to highlight the areas of my life at Cal that meant the very most to me.

SPARR is the acronym for the Student Parent Association for Recruitment and Retention, of which I am a member and would not have survived as a student parent without. This organization is absolutely vital for parents on our campus and the wealth of information, resources, connections, support networks, food and just about anything else you can think of is incredible! Its not just an organization within an institution. Its more like a family of people who know your struggle, within an institution that often does not. So, to represent SPARR and my student parent family on my stole was a no-brainer.

Then there is the Incentive Awards Scholarship, which presented me with this stole the other night at our graduation celebration dinner. They are the very reason that I came to Cal. The UC system wasn't even on my list of possibilities. I had my little heart set on going to Cal State Long Beach (due to my infatuation with Snoop Dog) or another school that had a good journalism undergrad program. All that changed when I was nominated and won a full academic ride to Cal. 7 years later, here I am, an Incentive Awards Scholarship alumni... an Incentive Awards Scholar.

And no accomplishment is greater than the one I made on June 5th 2003, and again in January of 2004. The day that I gave birth to my little Baby Bear, and the day that I returned to Cal with that Baby Bear as a re-admit student (parent). She has grown up in the university and aside from getting that degree in the mail once all of my work has been completed, she is, without a doubt, my greatest achievement while at Cal.

So...

Prom 2002

Pre-baby, pre-college study, pre-big chop.

My prom was quite interesting. The dj seemed to play certain genres of songs in waves that caused all the Mexican students to dance at one time and then return to their seats while the Blacks and Asians danced to the rap and R&B. It was really weird since we didn't go into the event or socialize in school in segregated groups. It was almost as if the dj did it on purpose, which made him and our prom, as a whole, pretty darn wack.

For my friends and I, there wasn't much fuss over finding dates to the prom. We were all going as a group to begin with so we all just partied together. I did ask a really good friend at the time to accompany me though, and he ended up being the oldest date there, making him a bit of a prom veteran. Especially since my prom was the second he'd gone to that prom season. I did all of my preparations the same day and me and said date had to hall ass to my friend's house or be left behind by the limo driver. Not to mention we all had to hide our male companions from the mother of another friend who was being dropped off because... well, it just wasn't ok for a Pakistani girl to be even thinking about boys, much less riding in a limo, going to a dance and staying out half the night with 3 of them!

It wasn't a total loss though. I got to get all dressed up in a little asymmetrical black dress, silk my hair out, take pictures, talk about and chuckle at all the popular girls that always walked around like they were the sh*t, and share the night with my closest friends.

Sweet

Need I say more?  My little nieces are just blossoming like two tulips. They are so precious, and funny, and active, and happy, and talkative... I just can't get enough of these little ladies. They remind me so much of Miss J when she was that age.  She'd coo up a storm, and just the sight of my face could put a smile on her's.  Now, what could be sweeter than that?

Got the child in clear heels already!

Judging from the Pull-Up, I'd say Miss J was probably around 2 or 2 1/2 when she decided to raid her aunt's closet and strut her little stuff around the room in these clear, light up heels. Yes, I said light up. And yes, I have a pair too.

Your America: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

There is a lot that can be said about America. The many different worlds that exist within this place. With no batteries in my camera and Tameka's America fresh on my brain, I am going to borrow a page from Tupac Shakur's America, laid out in his book of poetry, The Rose That Grew From Concrete, to help me out. I always find it funny how Tupac's words NEVER get old...

And 2morrow
By: Tupac Shakur

Today is filled with anger
Fueled with hidden hate
Scared of being outcast
Afraid of common fate
Today is built on tragedies
which no one wants 2 face
Nightmares 2 humanities
and morally disgraced
Tonight is filled with rage
Violence in the air
Children bred with ruthlessness
Because no one at home cares
Tonight I lay my head down
But the pressure never stops
gnawing at my sanity
content when I am dropped
But 2morrow I c change
A chance 2 build anew
Build on spirit, intent of heart
and ideals based on truth
And 2morrow I wake with second wind
And strong because of pride
2 know I fought with all my heart 2 keep my dream alive

Self Portrait Sunday

2009 Goal #1: Love Myself More/ Make Myself a Priority

How many times did I utter this phrase in 2008? How many times did I actually practice this in 2008? Let's see, I bet I can count the number of times on one hand. I was suppose to reposition myself and redirect my lifestyle in 2008. But, between devoting my time to school, Miss J and my countless worries, there is next to no time left in a day to take care of Ms. Bar B. Now that's just sad. Not making myself a priority is no longer acceptable. Its one thing to have to sacrifice for the greater good, but there comes a time when too much self-sacrifice gets to be a bit unhealthy. Well, I'm ready to do some maintenance. Ready to flip the "out of order" over to "newly renovated". Put some pep in my step and some wind up my nose. Confidence and motivation is beckoning me. Um hum, I got a little "I am the shit-ness" in my system and I think I am finally ready to start living up to my full potential.

With that said, I have taken flight. Destination? Healing.

Awesome

We've come to the last Shutter Click & Chat Sunday of the year! I have had so much fun participating and I am so glad that Tameka decided to start this weekly ritual. I love taking pictures and I love seeing the amazing snap shots of others. This last task was to end with something awesome. So... here they are. Miss Thing 1 and Miss Thing 2. They came into the world 6 months ago and have been blossoming ever since. They get even more awesome each time I see them. They love to laugh and play and nibble on any little thing they can get their hands on. The perfect little dual. Thing 1 looking like daddy and Thing 2 looking like mommy and older brother. Not to mention that mohawk that Thing 2 rocks. No matter how you brush her little curls they prefer to only grow down the middle of her head and to stay spruced. As for Thing 1, her mane prefers to lay silky. Just one of the many ways that the two are both different and totally awesome.

Now, show me your awesome. To participate in Shutter Click & Chat Sundays visit Tea N Honey Bread.

Sights of the Season

So, can you tell that I am excited? I have gone ahead and set the table already. I don't know why, since I don't even plan for the family to be seated here. I wanna put the spread on the table, fill those plates and high tail it to the comfy sectional for a Christmas movie of choice. We might take in a little Grinch or run through a couple of Tyler Perry's flicks. Nothing like a good Tyler play to bring on the laughter, love, and everything that is our little family.

I picked up this Snowman dinnerwear a couple of years ago at Target. I'm one of those people who will buy every matching piece, even though I don't need to. I almost bought this big coordinating Snowman cookie jar, knowing darn well that no cookie would have ever seen the inside of that thing. Miss J isn't big on cookies and I'm not either so it would have just been another prop. Just like the salt and pepper shakers in the middle of the table, lol. Not a sprinkle of salt nor pepper!

What "sights of the season" do you have to share? To participate in Shutter Click and Chat Sunday visit Tea N Honey Bread.

Shutter Click & Chat Sundays and The Photoshoot

America's next top model, at your service! Ok, it will be more like, America's next top Bar B once Flawless Magazine hits beauty salons next year. Oh. My. Goodness. I had sooo much fun at the photoshoot yesterday ya'll. I know the bob-gone-wild and the dramatic makeup are a little much, but boy did I look good it all look good on camera. My stylist decided that the theme of the shoot would be African warriors and queens. My stylist, who goes by the name of Wildboy when he is in the zone, his son, myself and another woman were all transformed by beautiful makeup and a killer wardrobe created by Wildboy's friend Tim.

Wildboy and son were adorned in elaborate shirts made of fur, leather and cowry shells and skirts and leg bracelets made of old hula skirts straw. Add some dreds, an extra fly mohawk with tribal designs and some bows and spears and you've got a couple of handsome tribal warriors. Then there were the queens. Val was rocking a long flowy brown skirt with a leather belt decorated with branches and cowry shells, while smothering her girls in coconuts. Yes, Miss Lady was working it out in a bra made of coconut shells, branches and cowry shells. It was pretty hot.

And as for the woman of the hour... yours truly... the fabulously beautiful Ms. Bar B? I also had a long flowy brown skirt and a corset made of leather, branches and cowry shells. I thought my halloween corset was something. Everytime I bent forward two centimeters I was cracking all over the place. One of the branches on the back of the corset was poking me in the butt during some poses and we almost succeeded in gluing my eye shut while applying false eyelashes... like I said, that shoot was sooo much fun! At the end of the shoot we were sweeping up branches and straw from everywhere we went throughout the building, hehe. I can't wait to get the pictures so that I can share them with you. And when the magazine is available I will let you all know so that you can see the whole tribal party.

Friendship

Today's Shutter Click & Chat Sunday is all about celebrating friendship. This, I can do, only because I am fortunate enough to know true friendship. There are 3 people that I have in my life that I share an eternal bond with. People that hold a place in my life and heart that some who share my blood do not. These 3 people are much more than friends, they are family.

WE RIDE TOGETHER, WE DIE TOGETHER...

Tonya (the bff). Our bond began in the 5th grade. She is the one who knows my inner most darkest and deepest secrets. She is God-mother to my daughter and blood sister to me. She has always had my back, no matter the situation, and she stands in my corner to support and rally around me whenever I need her, and to also, always, tell it like it is when I must hear it like it is.

Jeremy (the male opinion). Jr. High is where we first met. Enduring the dreadful breath of our math teacher day after day, JB was always there with answers ready for me to copy. Together we made it through math, High School and are forever bonded through life's experiences. He is God-father to my daughter and blood brother to me.

Maria (the primary support). We also found each other during the Jr. High years. Some could say that if it were not for her and JB, I just might have starved to death during our Jr. High and High School years. She is always there with an open ear and her honest opinion. I will forever be indebted to this woman... literally!! Lol. For this reason and many many more, she holds a special place in my life and she is a blood sister to me.

Laughter

To this day, I do NOT remember what the heck we were laughing at. All I know is that a birthday was being celebrated and drinks were involved. It was the birthday of the sister of the friend who is pictured here laughing her head off right next to me. Jay must have been telling us one of his crazy, hilarious, freaky tales again. We were at a bar that is located near my house and obviously living in an incredible moment of happiness.

Gratitude

Miss J. @ 4 Days Old

To participate in Shutter Click & Chat Sunday visit Tea N Honey Bread.

Most of the time, I spend a lot of time internalizing all of the tremendous loses that I have had, sacrifices that I have made and challenges that I still have yet to face. Although I do have gratitude for many things, that which is reserved for my daughter overshadows the rest. She is not only the reason that I live, but literally the reason why I am alive today. A true reflection of my mother and God's love. Her overbearing shower of love has the power to bring me out of the deepest, darkest of places and I often find myself wondering where it originates from, instead of just taking it at face value.

The day I met her, I fell in love harder than I knew was possible and my entire world changed. For that, I am eternally grateful. What do you hold the most gratitude for?

Need I really say more? The perfect compliment to any breakfast. Ice cold and loaded with the nourishment of Vitamin C, orange juice is easily one of my favorites. Only coming in second to cranberry juice of course =).

Comforting Goodness

Seafood Jambalaya

As I thumbed through this month's issue of Essence magazine, I was excited to see a recipe for Jambalaya. Its been a while since the last time any has filled a pot in my house. I'm one of those people who always needs to consult a recipe, yet, who has never taken the time to create handy recipe cards for all of my favorite dishes. Each time I want to make mac & cheese or some other delicious soul food dish, I have to call my grandmother, who reminds me that she has no idea how many teaspoons of vanilla should go here or cups of milk should go there, because she does just as Rachel Ray does and eyeballs it. My last jambalaya recipe disappeared so I made sure to neatly rip this one from the magazine and safely tuck it away in the same kitchen drawer that housed the last one.

My favorite part of this meal is the preparation. I love chopping things. The celery, bell pepper, garlic, onion, and smoked sausage. I'm a dicing queen. I even like to make a big ass mess chop herbs! When chopping up all of that hardy comforting goodness you just somehow know that your taste buds will be overjoyed once the two meet. What taste buds don't like veggies? Especially when you add a little shrimp.

Then, finished it off with some fresh flat leaf parsley.

Happiness Is...

Getting into mommy's makeup bag while she is sleeping...

I can't remember how old Miss J. was when I took this picture, but I do remember how happy she was with her newly madeup face. And how long it took me to scrub all of the mascara off of her teeth and tongue. There is never a dull moment when your mini-me is freely on the loose. Now, its your turn. Share your happy moments with me.

Ok, so I didn't take this picture, but I absolutely LOVE sunflowers and they definitely qualify as being one of mother nature's marvels. I don't really know what, besides its beauty, that makes this my favorite flower. Perhaps because of its bright and sunny yellow color, which reminds me of happiness or because I was once a sunflower seed junkie, which reminds me of childhood. Either way, being in the presence of sunflowers brings me joy. I wish I could grow a whole field of them just for me. No, you can't have one, didn't know hear me say they were just for me??

If you dare to break out your camera on a late Sunday afternoon, I'd love to see and read about what marvels you managed to find. If you'd rather wait until next Sunday to play along that's cool too. I will come back and update what you should be taking pictures of for next Sunday. Until then...

My 3 inch "strap around the ankles" heels made by Bakers

I wore these shoes this year for my 24th birthday celebration.

This would make a great outfit for an evening out. I love this dress and I have been trying to talk myself into buying it, especially because it also comes in red, which would go beautifully with my red and while polka dot pumps that I shared with you last Sunday. Considering the price, it is quite possible that I could get both and not feel extremely guilty about doing it.

What amazing wardrobe where you able to put together? I would love to see it. If you'd like to participate next Sunday...

The Money Shot

This photo captured one of the rare moments that I did something for myself. It was last year, in celebration of my 23rd birthday, that I finally took my friend up on her offer to come down to her house for a photo shoot. I am definitely no model nor glamor girl, but I do have a love for photography so I figured that maybe I could be on the other end of the lens for a change. I went down and let my girl at Ghetto Glam Photography bring out my inner America's Next Top Model.

I remember laying eyes on these pumps and then almost fainting when I found the matching shirt. I bought them, even though they have a 3 1/2" heel and I already knew that I wouldn't be able to walk 10 steps in them without having to sit down. This reason alone is why they stayed in the box for two months after they made their Valentine's Day debut. Since then, I have purchased two more matching shirts and even some matching earrings as proof that my feet have now become friends with these polka dot beauties.

I would love to see your money shot. I know you have one stashed away or proudly displayed that you can share. So go right ahead and get to sharing!! If you wanna take a pass then I guess I can understand, but think about participating next Sunday with...
