Where I Am From

Since this is A Place of Comfort, I thought that maybe I should sit down, kick off my shoes and dig around in this extra baggage that I have been carrying to see if I could find a pillow, or perhaps even a nice cozy blanket. After about 6 hours of continuous searching I did manage to discover this blanket, but this is not just any blanket, but a security blanket. One that became mine eight years ago, and that contains many memories of my childhood, and that I just stashed away... out of sight, out of mind... Why don't you come over here and sit down next to me, and kick off your shoes too if you want to, so that you will be able to hear what this piece of fabric has to say...

I am from...
Greens, cornbread, hot chips and Now or Laters,
I am from...
Decision-makers, promise makers, and heart-breakers,
I am from...
Candyland, Nintendo and Super Mario Brothers,
I am from...
Fudge brownies, Strawberry Cisco, and the death of my mother,
I am from a religion that teaches you that God is good, and to do unto others as you would want them to do unto you.
From The Spot in high school to the hop scotch games in elementary,
I am from...
Jerry Springer, Ricki Lake and Jenny Jones,
I am from...
Elementary dances that played "This is How We Do It" and apartment complexes that played "Breaking My Heart",
All the way to strawberry cheesecake, cookies & cream ice cream and pizza, From "if you don't have something nice to say don't say anything at all", "everything happens for a reason", and "clean your room",
From "clean your room",
To my room, where there are posters covering every inch of every wall and me sitting in my chair, on the floor or on my bed, writing.
This is where I'm from.

This old piece of fabric had a lot to say about my life's past. Things that I don't always keep in my mind, but probably should. Probably should because the majority of the things that this blanket revealed put a smile on my face. I am curious to know what lies in the extra baggage that you are carrying around. Are there any pillows? Shattered mirrors? Perhaps you might have a blanket or two waiting to be revisited. You'll never know unless you take a minute to sit down and examine it, especially if your baggage is weighing you down these days. Sometimes it is a good thing to open that baggage up because there just might be something there that can be removed. So, go ahead, try it out and let me know what you find.
